Tandem Appliances

tandem

The Tandem appliance is specifically designed to help move your teeth to Dr. Smith’s recommended position. In some cases, cooperation with this appliance may reduce the need for headgear, extractions, or surgery. It only works when worn, so remember you only hurt yourself if it isn’t worn.

The Tandem is designed to withstand normal forces in the mouth. Like all other orthodontic appliances, it can be damaged or broken if appropriate care is not taken. Here are some easy tips to help ensure that your experience with your tandem is as trouble free as possible.

The upper part of the Tandem is a traditional expander with two extensions hooks. The lower portion of the Tandem may be removable or fixed. The hooks in the front are necessary for hooking up the elastic bands.

Here are some tips to help with your appliance:

  • Do not play with the appliance with your tongue, fingers, pencils, etc…
  • Turn your appliance daily as directed by Dr. Smith.
  • Avoid hard or sticky foods, they may loosen or break your appliance.
  • Do not place your lip under the wire and push up. This places a lot of force, and WILL loosen the bands!
  • Wear as directed by Dr. Smith.
  • When not being worn keep your appliance in the case provided to avoid being lost or broken. Lost or broken appliances will need to be replaced at patient’s expense.
  • Keep appliances away from small children or pets.
  • Brush your appliances with toothpaste before you put them in and when you take them out. You may use denture cleaner or diluted mouthwash weekly to keep them fresh.
  • Do not place your appliance in hot water or expose it to heat. This could cause it to warp or melt.

If not properly cared for, the fixed and removable appliances have parts that may be lost or broken. If repair or replacement is required, there will be a charge.

All new appliances will feel big and bulky for some time. Some sore spots may develop, and eating and talking will get easier with time. Everyone adjusts to their appliance at a different pace. However, expect several days of adapting to your appliance. If problems persist or worsen, some adjustments may be required.
